How do you practise singing scales and modes with a reference?
Pick a root note in your comfortable range, choose a scale such as the major scale or the harmonic minor, and a mode, which is the same notes starting from another degree: C Dorian is C D E♭ F G A B♭ C. Then sing along with the notes played slowly, up and down, and raise the speed little by little once you are in tune. This free trainer plays any scale and mode from any root note, ascending, descending or both, shows each note as it plays, and lets you set the speed from 40 to 200 beats per minute.
What are scales and modes, and why practise them?
A scale is a set of notes arranged from low to high that repeats at every octave: the major scale is the familiar do-re-mi. A mode is the same set of notes starting from a different one. Play the notes of C major from D to D and you get D Dorian, which sounds darker and more minor. Singing scales trains your ear to hear the distance between notes, which is what makes you sing in tune, and it builds breath control and agility. Start slowly, and raise the speed only when every note is clean. This tool only plays the notes: it does not listen to you or use the microphone.
